We are currently seeking a Senior Manager, Laboratory Automation and Technology Development to lead the Reference Laboratories Technical Operations team. This individual will be based at our corporate headquarters in Westbrook, Maine.

The Senior Manager will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing laboratory workflows within IDEXX’s network of veterinary reference laboratories. The incumbent will support and direct efforts to aggressively develop and implement new technologies and automate existing clinical diagnostic applications while continually improving operating margins and return on investments. The Senior Manager will insure that appropriate and comprehensive operating systems and documentation are in place to identify and close the gap between technical, medical and quality operations, including evaluation and validation of new assays, standardization across laboratories, and alignment with other lines of business. The end goal is to provide IDEXX customers effective and efficient diagnostic reference lab services with world-class quality performance.

Success will be measured by increased efficiency of operations throughout the laboratory system. Critical to success is the interaction, coordination and teamwork across functions (medical, lean, quality, marketing, sales, etc). Work will include collaborating with a broad range of engineering disciplines including automation, electrical, mechanical, software, biomedical, data analysis, operating system validation/verification, and reliability. The Senior Manager will review key laboratory/medical/business processes and relevant operational initiatives in order to create a strategy for common lab instrumentation and technology, leveraging best operating practices to incorporate lean principles.

Requirements:

EDUCATION: Masters degree or equivalent experience in engineering or a related technical discipline; PhD preferred. Education or work experience in a medical laboratory environment is preferred but not required.

EXPERIENCE:
• 10-15 years in engineering, instrument/process/product development and systems integration
• 5+ years experience in management of engineers
• Experience implementing (Lean) Six Sigma in a lab or similar environment
• Experience with designing, building and deploying automated laboratory workflows in life sciences or clinical diagnostics laboratories.
• Experience working with articulated robots, liquid handlers, workflow automation and scheduling software
• Experience with assay evaluation, validation, design of experiments and statistical data analysis
• Experience with digital imaging hardware and image analysis algorithms

SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Ability to coordinate with a full range of engineering disciplines in order to build operating systems to solve operating, business and technical problems.
• Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, biomedical, and software design and integration.
• Ability to communicate with diverse audiences and translate complex technical insights into meaningful information and action plans.
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Strong project management skills.
• Strong software skills in writing automation scripts and protocols, engineering CAD software such as Solid Works, data analysis and statistics software packages and MS Office.
• Experience in medical/veterinary diagnostics, life sciences and customer support, including the use of diverse distribution channels, is a plus.
• Collaborative leadership style that focuses on results and generates trust in teams.
• Comfortable in high-stress, fast paced, rapidly changing environment and with situations including business performance shifts and decision making with at times imperfect information.
• Ability to travel (domestically and globally) up to 25% of the time.
