Essential Functions:
Summary: Position researches, develops, designs and tests computer software components, products and systems for medical and scientific applications and determines the need for equipment and software. Position is with the Drug Discovery Program of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and provides support for its drug discovery research unit (approximately 20 researchers). This position requires a flexible and team-oriented approach, with solid programming ability and willingness to learn.

Essential Functions:
1. Maintain and upgrade a custom laboratory automation solution that implements cell culture and cellular assay processes in the context of drug discovery research.
2. Program, maintain, and troubleshoot a liquid handler (Caliper Sciclone) and various other pieces of laboratory equipment and laboratory automation (plate readers, automated incubators, carousels, stackers, plate handlers, high content imager, etc).
3. Refine and implement software that controls, integrates and schedules laboratory instrumentation and robotics, building off of existing software on site (Overlord 3, Caliper Maestro).
4. Map, analyze and refine laboratory processes to implement continuous improvement of automation processes, and optimize existing automation solutions.
5. Fix instruments/replace faulty parts and coordinate service calls with local distributors as required. In concert with assay development scientists, assist in the conversion of manual bench methods to automated methods (robotic script writing, timing/scheduling, process design and optimization)
6. Keep current with advances in laboratory technology.
7. Develop new laboratory automation customized solutions beyond existing off-the-shelf solutions proposed by manufacturers (requires programming, creativity and strong out-of-the-box thinking).

Required Qualifications:
Equivalent of Bachelors Degree in computer/software engineering, Master?s degree preferred with 3 to 5 years experience in related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Engineering background preferred.
2. In-depth knowledge of the MS Windows XP operating system is a must.
3. Object oriented programming or scripting using .NET languages (VB.NET required, C# a plus).
4. General programming (i.e. Perl, C/C++, SQL), knowledge of relational databases, Mac OS/X, and Linux.
5. Ability to manage a LAN for the automation facility, including providing access to data for analysis, remote backup, etc.
6. Hands-on experience configuring, programming, and troubleshooting laboratory automation systems, including articulated robotic arms (Beckmann Orca), scheduling systems, liquid handling systems (e.g. Caliper Sciclone) and detection instruments (i.e. qPCR, plate readers, high content imagers) is desirable.
7. Teamwork required. Must be able to communicate effectively with biologists and chemists.
8. Willingness to learn, autonomy, resourcefulness, critical thinking, and attention to detail are absolute requirements.
9. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills (multi-tasking ability is a must).
10. Interest in basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques is a plus.
