Job Title: Compound Management Scientist
Department: Drug Discovery
Description: We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented chemist to join our compound management laboratory. This position requires the scientist to maintain, receive, format and disseminate inventory from Targacept's research compound sample bank. The compounds are stored and handled in solid and solution format. The chemist will perform all data tracking and sample preparation using balances or liquid handling instrumentation when expediting compound requests. Fulfillment of shipment requests to contacts outside of the company will require the scientist to correctly package and document samples in preparation for transport. The candidate should expect work of a semi-routine, critical nature that allows for a minimal margin of error.
Reports to: Director of Drug Discovery
Requirements:
This position will interface with all areas of research and therefore must be customer service oriented. The individual must have a high aptitude for common computer programs and must be comfortable learning new software and hardware systems. Most importantly, this candidate should be highly organized. It is expected that the candidate will be able to read, understand, follow and implement safety procedures. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• BS in Chemistry or related life sciences discipline, and a minimum of 2 years experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.
• Two years of experience in a chemistry or compound management lab within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
• Strong general laboratory skills for weighing solids and pipetting solutions
• Solid computer skills for using inventory and robotic control software
• Excellent flexibility, adaptability, creativity and detail orientation
• Ability to work in both a team setting as well as independently
• Highly self-motivated and dependable
• Experience with MS Excel and Word programs, liquid handling robotics (Tecan Freedom EVO or equivalent) required
• Experience with inventory control software (Titian Mosaic) desired
• IATA Dangerous Goods training a plus
